A little while back we did a review of A Band of Ghosts; an avant-garde band that played spooky, jazzy tunes. In that review we said they were working on their debut album. Well, guess what, that album’s finished! A Band of Ghosts is set to release their debut album, “Musical Machine”, in mid-August, and this spooky blues album is definitely something to get excited about.
As I’ve said before, albums are the real test of a band’s mettle. A good album not only demonstrates a band’s talents and strong suits, but also their versatility and consistency. “Musical Machine” was seemingly made with this in mind, because it gets full marks in all these categories. To me, A Band of Ghosts excels at making spooky and dark sounds. The quintessential A Band of Ghosts song is supposed to remind you of poorly lit roads at night, thunderstorms, and thick fogs. There is an ominous feeling you get with A Band of Ghosts, but that isn’t to say that they limit themselves to one musical style, or rely on one sound to get by; this is not a band of gimmicks. A Band of Ghosts varies their sound by throwing in reggae, funk, and pop influences into some songs. This isn’t to say that their album doesn’t mesh as a whole, as they blend these contrasting influences well with their spooky sound. In the end, the album is tight, the songs are all unique and entertaining, and Andrea Thorne’s voice is spectacular as always.
A Band of Ghosts is set to release “Musical Machine” in mid-August. If you want to try something different, I highly recommend this album. It’s not going to be like anything you’ve heard before, yet somehow familiar at the same time. Here’s a peak at the new album’s title track “Musical Machine” to wet your pallet.
