New Music: Aaron Stephens

Singer-songwriter Aaron Stephens has power.  I’m tempted to brand his hooky blend of soul and folk it’s very own style, a genre I’ll call ‘sulk’ – or sulkcore if you want get all scene about it.  His voice filled with heartache and his fingers patiently plucking away at his guitar, Stephens breaks right through your walls.  No frills.  No bullshit.  Just unfiltered emotion delivered so calmly and so skillfully that you just need to sit and stare for a while.  The artist says it best himself:

These songs are about real experiences that I’m going through and I’m not trying to hold back any details. It’s straight from the soul.

Stephens names a variety artists as influences, ranging from Bob Dylan to Common.  Since picking up his first guitar at the age of thirteen, the McAllen, Texas native has played to audiences around the Rio Grande Valley and beyond.  Stephens is currently busy prepping for the release of his new 7 song EP, To Reach Your Soul.

Listen to his track Man I’m Called and tell me you didn’t shed a tear – or at least find yourself wistfully staring out the window thinking about life, love, and what it all means.
